An independent report conducted by a private economic consultancy finds that Scouting offers “social, environmental and economic benefits to its members and its communities.”

The Impact of Scouting report notes that 80% of the external organisations (including voluntary, public and private sector firms) surveyed said that Scouting benefitted their organisation while 69% said that it benefitted their clients or service users.

The report also evidenced that when Scouting was present in a community it provided a broad range of mutual benefits including shared facilities, training opportunities, youth diversion activities, and support at community or civic engagement events. 40% of the local and voluntary groups surveyed stated that some of the activities and work above would not be possible in their local community in the absence of Scouting.

Commenting on the project, Minister for Children and Young People, Angela Constance said:

“The Scottish Government understands the huge importance of the early years and how the positive development of youngsters can pay huge dividends in future years.

“It’s crucial our young people get the best possible start in life and pursuits such as Scouting are a great way of ensuring this happens. As the report shows, those involved in Scouting are gaining experience which not only builds their confidence now, but helps develop employment skills which will benefit our future economy.

“Overall, this report is hugely encouraging and clearly outlines that involvement in organisations such as Scouts Scotland is a strong investment in a youngster’s future.’’

Chief Commissioner of Scotland for The Scout Association Graham Haddock, said,

“I’m delighted that this report has confirmed what we already know to be the outstanding and positive contribution our adult volunteers and youth members are making to their local communities. In addition to enhancing their own personal and professional development, Scouts are actively helping improve the lives of others.”
