ClanJam 2011

Bonaly Scout Centre was home for the 200 Scouts and leaders participating in Clanjam 2011 from 30 July to 6 August. Scouts from South East Region joined with others from around Scotland to host groups travelling from England, Denmark and Taiwan.

Clanjam was planned as part of the Bonaly 80th Birthday celebrations and, after everyone gathered on the Saturday, the event kicked off with an excellent Opening Ceremony and Campfire. The international gathering was soon in full swing and everyone was able to share some of each other’s cultures during the Country Fair on the Sunday evening.

Activities through the week included water activities at Longcraig and a day in Edinburgh featuring a visit to the Castle. In and around Bonaly, participants had lots of activity opportunities including the opportunity to make lots of things during craft sessions and on the electronics activity; to use their first aid skills dealing with various mock incidents and had great fun building and sailing rafts.

The camp was divided into two sub-camps Maclean and Mackenzie and there was the usual friendly rivalry between them. Maclean were well outdone by the Mackenzie sub-camp gateway – a huge pioneering structure constructed mainly by the group from Denmark – but made up for it in many other ways!

A highlight of the camp for many of those present was the visit to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on the Thursday evening – a real opportunity to showcase a great event to our visitors; including the UK Chief Commissioner, Wayne Bulpitt who visited that day.

On the Friday afternoon, everyone participated in Clan Capers before the evening campfire and a quite spectacular closing ceremony.

Then, home on the Saturday, exhausted, after a great time and with many happy memories.
